STUDY
02 / 2019

These are Germany’s best ‘Mittelstand’ companies.

Munich Strategy has identified Germany’s fastest-growing and most profitable ‘Mittelstand’ companies. The study “TOP 100 Ranking des Mittelstands” has been published for the ninth year running. Lamy, Stockert, Ravensburger, Bionorica, Brita, Atoss and Rapunzel are among the winners.

3.500 medium-sized German companies with an annual turnover of 10 million to about 1 billion euros were analyzed for the study. Criteria for the ranking: the companies’ revenue growth and EBIT margin during a five-year period (weighted fifty percent each).

TOP 100 grow faster than DAX companies

With a revenue growth of 11.5 %, TOP 100 companies grow significantly stronger than average ‘Mittelstand‘ companies (5.6 %) and DAX companies (6.1 %). Compared to DAX companies, TOP 100 maintain efficient structures which allow them to respond flexibly to changing market and competitive conditions. This is the basis for their high EBIT margin (14.2 % on average).

Average revenue growth 2013-2016/17:

High resilience

Germany’s growth champions have significantly expanded their resilience since the financial crisis in 2008. The average equity ratio has increased by 11.9 % between 2007 and 2016 – from 43.1 to 55 %. The higher equity ratios of TOP 100 companies hint to an increased stability among German mid-sized companies.

Equity ratio 2007 and 2016:

Mittelstand becomes ‘Mitteltech’

Technology-driven companies dominate the ranking in 2018 and show the strongest performance. 52 of 100 winners are ‘Mitteltech‘ companies and leading in the sectors technology, mechanical and plant engineering or construction machinery. With a revenue growth of 11.8 % and an EBIT margin of 15.1 % they represent the TOP 100 peak group. Munich Strategy has identified three different types of ‘Mitteltech’ companies based on their prevailing success strategies: ‘digital enablers’, ‘customer insiders’ and ‘product titans’.
