Ranking: Germany’s most sustainable medium-sized companies 2023

For the second time following 2022, our consultants Barbara Siegert and Laura Fuchs, on behalf of business magazine WirtschaftsWoche, have examined which German medium-sized companies are pioneers in the fields of ecology, social responsibility, and governance.

For the study, more than 4,000 medium-sized enterprises were analyzed through a multi-stage analytical process. 400 finalists were analyzed in depth. A specially developed “Sustainability Score” evaluates engagement based on three criteria: ESG perception, ESG documentation, and ESG implementation.

Sustainability has become a central component of corporate strategy.

Sustainability is ingrained at the core of the top 50 companies. ESG goals are closely linked to the company’s values, mission, and corporate objectives. Sustainability efforts are reported on in detail and transparency.

Sustainability has become a differentiating factor.

Positioning themselves in the field of sustainability is a crucial differentiating factor for ESG pioneers — not only towards customers but also with regards to current and potential employees, suppliers, and strategic partners.

Companies’ efforts in E, S and G are becoming more balanced.

Sustainability for ESG champions is more than just reducing carbon emissions. They demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of sustainability. Social responsibility and corporate governance have gained significance. E, S, and G are increasingly approached in a balanced manner.
