The TOP 100 ‚Mittelstand‘ companies.
They keep a low profile and are highly successful in working their national and international markets: German ‚Mittelstand‘ companies are considered the growth engine of the German economy and enjoy an excellent reputation around the world. The study „TOP 100 ‚Mittelstand‘ companies 2017“ puts a spotlight on the ‚silent superstars‘ and awards Germany’s 100 strongest SMEs.
Munich Strategy analyzed over 3.500 medium-sized companies with an annual turnover of 10 million to about 1 billion euros for the study. Criteria for the ranking: the company‘s revenue growth and EBIT margin during a five-year period (weighted 50 percent each).
‚Digital pioneers‘ dominate the TOP 100 2017.
SMEs with digital products or services are the big winners of this year’s ranking. The technology sector dominates at all levels. 15 percent of all TOP 100 companies are ‚digital pioneers‘ and pave the way for other medium-sized companies. They offer for example software, sensor technology, network infrastructure or consulting on automation.

„TOP 100“ companies show a strong performance.
With a revenue growth of 10.2%, TOP 100 companies grow significantly stronger than average ‚Mittelstand‘ companies (3,4%) and DAX companies (3.7%). TOP 100 companies are integrated within global value chains. Average SMEs have an export rate of less than 50% while TOP 100 companies generate over 60% of their revenue in global markets.
